Grant Guidelines

Because Canadian Women's Foundation is a registered charitable foundation, by law, we are only permitted to give grants to organizations which are charities registered with Canada Revenue Agency.

Please make sure that you supply us with your new charitable number, now referred to as a business number. These were allocated to all charitable organizations by the Canada Revenue Agency in 1997.

In cases where unregistered non-profit organizations partner with a registered charity on an eligible project, the grant money will be awarded to the registered charity involved.

To check that your number is in good standing go to Canada Revenue Agency or call them at 1-800-267-2384 (French phone number: 1-888-892-5667)

We Do Not Fund

  • individuals
  • federal, provincial or municipal government agencies and school boards (they can be involved in a project but the grant will be made to a women’s organization directly)
  • profit-based organizations
  • fundraising events
  • projects outside of Canada
  • projects not solely or primarily focused on women and girls (although violence prevention projects for teens may involve both girls and boys)
  • deficit or emergency funding
  • conferences, films or videos
  • capital campaigns or expenditures such as furniture or computers
  • research
  • self-defense training (if it is the only component of a violence prevention project)
