Violence Prevention Grants

YWCA of Canada, Iqualuit, Nunavut (2007) $23,000
The YWCA of Canada was invited by women in Iqualuit to help them become a YWCA. As a result, “Developing Sustainable, Critical Services for Women and Girls in Iqualuit, Nunavut" is building the foundation to become a YWCA Member Association. The main goal for this initiative is to keep open the doors of the Qimaavik violence against women shelter (the only 24-hour shelter in Nunavut), and create residential services for homeless women and their children.

In conjunction with existing victim services offered by the Aggvik Society, the organization is creating new programming for children who have witnessed abuse and, in partnership with the school board and Inuksuk high school, developing violence intervention and prevention programs for girls. This is a large program in which CWF funding plays a small but critical role.

Baffin Regional Agvvik Society, Iqaluit: $26,184 (2004)
Domestic violence is a major problem in the north and a housing shortage forces many women to return to abusive relationships. Many come to the shelter in Iqaluit from small, remote communities. This program helps survivors of domestic violence rebuild their lives and the lives of their children. Clients participate in customized workshops that focus on life skills and empowerment.
