Violence Prevention Grants

St. Anthony & Area Boys & Girls Club (2007) $10,000
The G.I.R.L.S. (Girls Initiative Regarding Life Skills) Project works with 13 to 15-year-old girls to help them recognize unhealthy relationships and understand the role gender plays in the context of violence. Sessions are being held in four communities in northern rural Newfoundland and address self-esteem, influence of media on teen girls, gender, power and dating violence, bullying, communication, conflict resolution, assertiveness, peer pressure, and leadership.

Newfoundland & Labrador Sexual Health Centre (NLSHC) (2007) $22,889
"Girl Time: Grade 7 & 8 Healthy Sexuality" is a violence prevention program for girls aged 12 to 14. Initially piloted in St. John's, NLSHC plans to deliver this program to rural youth. The curriculum includes self-awareness, personal values, body awareness and stereotypes, healthy relationships, decision-making/communication skills and peer pressure. Each session is focused on a topic area pertinent to delaying premature sexual activity and making healthy choices about sexuality. A steering committee made up of teens will help to inform the direction of the program

Parents are provided with an overview of program content, a handbook, and tips on communicating with their children about sex.

Grand Falls-Windsor Committee Against Violence $22,722 (2006)
This initiative is developing an awareness campaign on the effects of domestic violence on children, with presentations being conducted in various communities. The organization will also host a series of educational/training sessions with two small groups of mothers who are survivors of domestic violence.

Transition House Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, St. John’s: $20,000 (2005)
The goal of this initiative is to implement a standardized training package for front-line staff working in transition houses throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. The training is designed to increase and enhance their knowledge and skills. The Association will travel to all seven shelters in the province and conduct training sessions with staff and management. The training package contains 3 modules: Module A: Crisis Intervention, Intake and Assessment Module; B: Therapeutic Communication Module; C: Community Development/Outreach/Advocacy.

Planned Parenthood, St. John's: $18,700 (2004)
"Making a Splash" trains youth facilitators, aged 15 to 17, to educate other youth about dating violence, healthy relationships and the impact of gender and media stereotyping. Based on the “Making Waves” model, facilitators develop leadership, facilitation, and peer-based education skills over a 3-month training period. Following this, they will deliver violence prevention workshops to approximately 20 schools and community centres.

Planned Parenthood Newfoundland Labrador will also organize a weekend retreat for fifteen girls, aged 14 to 16, to discuss the impact of violence on girls in Newfoundland.
