Girls’ Fund Grants

Les Scientifines, Science Journal program
Montréal
2009-2012: $75,000 over three years

Les Scientifines, based in a high needs area of Montréal, is working to break the cycle of poverty and keep girls in school by fostering their interest and competence in science. By providing afterschool programs five days a week, they provide a safe place for girls to do their homework, develop positive peer relationships and explore science. The programs encourage curiosity and perseverance, and develop their skills in research, problem solving and the scientific method.

Funding from CWF supports The Science Journal program, which allows girls to research, design and create a bi-monthly science journal on a specific topic they select. The journal is then distributed to local schools for use in science classes.
