Girls’ Fund Grants

Circle of Life Thunderbird House, Sacred Buds Blossoming
Winnipeg
2009-2012: $110,100 over three years

Whaka Pimadiziiwii Pinaysiiwigamic – Circle of Life Thunderbird House – believes that healthy people make healthy communities and healthy communities foster healthy economies. They provide a place of gathering for cultures, activities and learning.

Funding from CWF supports Sacred Buds Blossoming, a program that guides the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical health and well-being of young Aboriginal girls; particularly those at high risk or already displaying destructive behaviour. Girls participate in cultural activities and traditional practices, and are connected with respected female elders. Through this program girls develop new interests, social and life skills, self-esteem, self-respect and hope for their futures.

Ka Ni Kanichihk, Butterfly Club
Winnipeg
2009-2012: $93,800 over three years

Ka Ni Kanichihk is located in central Winnipeg – an area with a high population of Aboriginal, disadvantaged, refugee and immigrant people. The organization provides culturally based education, training and employment programs that include leadership and community development, and healing and wellness programs. Programs focus on empowerment of Aboriginal people, but are open to newcomers and refugees who live in the neighbourhood.

Funding from CWF supports The Butterfly Club, which helps girls from Aboriginal and other communities develop self-confidence and belonging in the world through academic, cultural and leadership activities. Girls participate in a wide array of activities they would normally not have the opportunity to try, like sports nights, cultural teaching and sharing circles, community service and wilderness survival.
